What Is a Tension Migraine?

Tension migraines have the combined symptoms of a tension headache and a migraine. The pain can be dull or throbbing, creating tension in the neck and head. Other symptoms can vary from person to person and might also include sensitivity to light, nausea, irritability, numbness or tingling. These types of symptoms are recurrent and can negatively impact quality of life if not treated.

Whom Do Tension Migraines Affect?

In 2016, 38 million in the U.S. suffered from migraines. The World Health Organization states that tension migraines generally affect more than 80 percent of adult females and 65 percent of adult males. About half of the adult females who suffer from tension migraines have more than one occurrence each month, with a quarter experiencing four or more severe attacks per month. Migraines can also affect children and often go misdiagnosed.

What Triggers Tension Migraines?

Tension migraines can be brought on for a number of different reasons. Some of the more common triggers include:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Lack of food or sleep
  • Exposure to light
  • Hormonal changes (in women)

Effective Treatment for Migraines

Migraine specialist Dr. Kevin Smith has done extensive research through clinical trials to discover the correlation between migraine headaches and the structures of the nose. In a clinical assessment of more than 2,000 patients suffering from migraines, Dr. Smith discovered that bone spurs or a deviated septum were a strong contributor to the recurrence of migraines. After removing or repairing these conditions, more than 1,800 of the 2,000 patients experienced complete relief from migraine pain.
